When a deposit comes back short, it is usually not because someone put a hole in a wall. It is because the place was handed over at the standard of a tidy home rather than the standard of an empty, inspected unit — and those are not the same thing.
An inspection goes to the same places every time. Inside the oven and around the seals. The fridge, including the drawers and the door channels. Inside kitchen cabinets and drawers, not just the fronts. Bathroom grout and the underside of the toilet. Window tracks, door frames and skirting boards. Light fittings and extractor vents. Most of those are invisible while you live somewhere and obvious the moment the furniture is gone.
That is the real reason move-out cleaning is a distinct job. An empty property exposes everything a rug or a wardrobe was covering, and the cleaning has to reach places that were physically unreachable a week earlier. It is also why it is worth doing after the movers have finished rather than around them.
The same logic runs the other way. A move-in clean of a property you have just taken on is the only moment you will ever have it empty, and it decides what you are living on top of for the next few years.
